I installed a new piece of software a couple days ago. Everything seemed right with the world at first, then I started noticing little things going very wrong...
When I tried to shutdown my computer, it hung up and wouldn't shut down. I resorted to killing it with the power button. Then I'd get a popup notice about my spysweeper program not running and I couldn't close that popup. Then some of the tools in my drawing program stopped working. It was definitely getting worse by the hour. Time for drastic measures!
The first step was to remove the new program. Then I rolled back my computer to an earliers time using "System Restore". It took half a day to get everything working right again but all is good now.
So what did I do next? I created another "System Restore" point on my computer! If your computer is running well today then TODAY is the right time to make a restore point.
Go to START / HELP & SUPPORT / "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore"
Then click where it says "Create A Restore Point" then "Next". Then give your restore point a name like "SETTINGS GOOD" and save it. That's it! You've got a good place to go back to now if you run into problems down the road.
Make one about once a week and you'll be way ahead when the need comes up.

Thank you Larry for that information. I had to laugh a little to myself cause I thought that I was the only one that has these problems, mine happened last night I won't say what I downloaded but after I removed it and came back on the computer there was a mess that I could not get rid of. My husband finally got it removed. ?? don't know how! I am going to take your advise now that I know how to do it and make a back-up copy. Thanks again, Carolyn

These things happen to everyone that uses computers long enough.

How much different is this process with those using Vista as their OS?

Marie -- I would GUESS that it's the same process but can't confirm that as I've avoided buying a Vista computer so far :-)

That's great advice!! My "dear" husband downloaded a malware program by accident the other night. I'm still not sure if I got totally rid of it or not, but if it rears it's ugly head again, I am going to use a previous restore point.
One thing about your advice to set restore points - I think my XP program automatically does periodic restore points? Maybe that is something that people should think about setting up if it is available on their operating system. Thanks!

I know alot more than I used to due to "Computer Skills for Embroidery" Volume 1 but I had no idea that I can set up a restore point. I'm going to do it today. Thank you so very much.
