"Tips" From 1949 Singer Manual

(I'm just quoting the manual here...)

"Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do...never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.

When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on. If you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should."

( "Tips" From 1949 Singer Manual! I can only imagine how well this would go over in one of today's manuals! I have to say I'm not sure if this is TRUE or NOT. Maybe someone made it up and passed it on, but it's funny anyway. -- Larry)

Sandra Franklin:

Hi Larry, That was hilarious. I'm frequently not even dressed!! still in pj's when I sew.
It reminds me , my late husband was a Navy Fighter pilot. Soon after we were married he brought home a little book with the title How to be a Navy Officers Wife. This was 1964. getting pretty close to the hippie movement. I had been raised a "southern bell " and was pretty sure I didn't need any further instructsions on how to be a lady. As I casualy flipped through the pages it stopped on the chapter of going aboard ship. Right in the middle of the page a sentence popped out at me, PANTIES ARE A MUST I closed the book and never picked it up again!!!

Oh, Larry, what a hoot!! I hope you don't mind that I shared this with some others who needed a laugh today. I included the Bobbin Buzz info, so maybe they'll sign up too. This is a GREAT newsletter, thanks for all your hard work. Marji Weber

Larry,
This is great. I love it & to think this was serious business back in the days
I am lucky to have done my hair, much less gotten dressed before I sew!
How times have changed.

Greatful you shared - I needed a laugh
