Has anyone used the Back Up Utility in XP? Hi all, I am about to install a new hard drive, my old one is old and I need more space. I haven't done a clone copy since Windows 98 - so I'm wondering if the Back Up Utility will work to make a clone of my drive and be able to put on the new drive? Or am I better off installing a fresh install of windows? *ugh* Thanks, -- Cindy

I have used the backup utility built into Windows many times BUT I've never tried to use it to move to a new hard drive. For that, I would suggest you try something like Aloha Bob.
1) Make a backup of your hard drive on a separate external hard drive. BE SURE all your data gets moved over properly.

I've used Aloha Bob's software before and found it to work pretty well. The data moves fine but don't be surprised if you have to reinstall some of your programs.

Hi. I'm new to machine embroidery and I have been downloading the free designs and I just adore this site. I decided to go ahead and get a subscription so I can support such a great site and get fantastic embroidery designs from. I am wondering the best way to save these files? Should I keep a zip folder and another for the open files? Keep under sections? Help appreciated.

Most people just download to their "my documents" area at first but soon realize that they can't find anything once they have a lot of designs. If you just download the designs from the ArtisticThreadWorks Design Library alone, you'll have over 13,000 designs to organize!

When faced with that many designs -- people start the quest for how to organize!

I had to put a new CD/DVD RW into my computer and the new one does wonderful on copying from disc to disc, but it takes over 2 and 1/2 hours to copy files from my computer to a disc. I was told that my drivers might not support the new CD/DVD RW drive. What are drivers and what do I need to do to fix the problem? Right now I can't back anything up from my computer and it is driving me crazy, I spent the whole day getting pictures off my computer when it should have only taken 20 minutes each CD. -- Faryn

A driver controls the input and output data to a device.
Generally, a device that requires drivers will come with an installation CD of some type. If it didn't, you can go to their website, and download the drivers. There should be installation instructions as to where on your harddrive you need to install your drivers. -- Siobhan
Also, be careful which blank cds you buy, [the speed will be on the package] First number is the speed that it can be written. Like 52 x /700mb/80 min or 12 x/700mb/80 min or 24x/700 mb/80 min. As you can see the speeds are very different.
This answer may be too simple, but burning takes so much RAM that i re-start my p.c. before i begin burning and restart after it is finished. -- Mama_Duck
What is the brand name and model number on the new disk drive you bought? I've never seen this problem before -- never even heard of this happening so I would guess a couple of things...
1) You got a defective burner
2) The software you're using to burn is not recognizing the 48x in burner (Driver problem)
I would try checking with the drive mfr on known problems and also report back here on the make/model and I'll see if I can find others with the same issue and see how they resolved it.
One final solution would be to replace it with a different CD/RW drive! Can you exchange it where you bought the thing? -- Larry

Hi Ellen -
All digitizing software creates designs in their own proprietary format. Once the design has been created you then EXPORT it to the format your machine needs. For example into PES, or DST, or HUS, or whatever format you want. So any digitizing program will digitize for a Singer Futura or any other brand of machine.
The only one that's a pain to deal with is the Bernina Artista machine because the only sofware that will save a design in the Artista format (called ART) is the Bernina software. That doesn't mean you have to digitize with Bernina software, just that you have to use Bernina software to convert the design to the Bernina format. This is very nice for the Bernina dealers - but not so good for their customers. ;-)
When I was first exposed to embroidery designs, I assumed that there was a program that you could use to just convert the clipart into a design, just like you can convert a JPG to a GIF file... Click-click-click-done! But it doesn't work that way.
Turning clipart into embroidery designs is called "digitizing". And the software is called "digitizing software". There are several programs on the market that do this and they range in price from $39 to $30,000 -- depending on what you want.
Before you get too excited about the $39 price tag I have to tell you the big... "BUT"
You generally get what you pay for in digitizing software. The $39 program is absolutely worthless! Don't even consider buying it, but if you do, then please don't say you weren't warned.
On the other end of the deal is the commercial programs that sell for anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000. That's not what you need either. Those programs were designed for a different purpose and a different market.
Fortunately, there are reasonably priced programs available that will work well. The low end is around $450 and the high end is around $1,900 for good digitzing software.
At the low end of the prices is the Embird Suite. It is sold in pieces or "modular components" so you can buy what you need and not the ones you don't need. To digitize you will want Embird 2006, Embird Studio, Embird Font Engine, and Iconizer. Total right now is $454 for all of them.
Next is "PeDesign" (or Palette as it is called in BabyLock stores) which does everything the Embird Suite does and some more stuff too for about $700.
Next is "Generations" which has a list price of about $1,600 and that I've seen for as little as $1,200 on sales. It is comparable to Pedesign.
Also available is "Artista" at your Bernina dealer. It's a home-version of a commercial program.
We are very familiar with all the above programs since we own them all and have used them. There are other programs available that are also used by many people with good results. These programs are "Origins, "Viking 4D", and "Janome Digitizer 10000".
I could recommend any of the above 7 programs as good choices. There are OTHER programs on the market that are BAD choices for various reasons. I won't name names but I can tell you that just because a program claims to do something, doesn't mean it really does. Also -- just because it makes what looks like an embroidery design on the screen doesn't mean it will sew it out well. So before you spend $39 or $1,399 on a probram not on the list above, do some extensive searching on the internet for opinions from other owners. Also - look for tutorials available from multiple sources. If the only tutorials available for a program come from the manufacturer then chances are nobody that owns the program was able to make it work well enough that they'd want to make a tutorial on how to use it.
Finally -- digitizing is a SKILL that must be acquired. Buying the software doesn't make you a digitizer any more than buying a clarinet makes you Benny Goodman! You must buy the software and learn how to USE it before you will be able to create designs. Once you buy a program, buy a tutorial or two and read (or watch) the tutorials. Then practice what you've learned and test-sew out what you've created. THEN you'll be a digitizer.
One more piece of advice that's important at this point...
All artwork is owned by someone. That ownership is called "Copyright". It is illegal to distribute a design that you create with artwork that you don't have permission to use from the copyright owner. For artwork that is legal to use and easy to digitize for a beginner, look at www.jdsclipart.com and buy one or two of her "generic" design sets. "Generic" sets mean they are sold to as many people that want to buy them, and are priced very reasonably at about $10 for 10 pieces of clipart.

Here are TWO WAYS to do this! The first answer is from "Mama_Duck"...
You'll need "Embird" for this first method...
( ">" below means "go to" )
>Embird > file you want to create a page of
Right click in the right on the file
Choose 'select all'
right click again and select 'view thumbnails.
> Right panel and select 'Print' then 'print thumbnails'
You will get two windows that will pop up. Here is where you will want to describe the file location name. Will make it easier for you to find those designs later.
This second way to do this does NOT give you a catalog of thumbnail pictures showing the design. It does however give you a list of the files on each CD. I've used this program for several years and it's reliable software...
Once you run the install routine, your right-click menus now have a new option (see picture below) that allows you to PRINT A LIST of everything in a file folder on your hard drive or CD!
Here's a video you would benefit greatly from if you don't know everything you want to know about using your computer for machine embroidery yet...

It seems like every week I see a couple warnings about computer virus being spread. The vast majority of them are hoaxes being passed on by well-intentioned people that don't know HOW to check into whether or not the virus is for real.
First -- I'll tell you how to verify ANYTHING as true or false in seconds. Then I'll tell you how to verify if a virus warning in particular is real or fake.
There's a website called SNOPES that is basically "rumor central" for the internet. Just got there and either do a search or click through a category to find anything listed on the topic your verifying. It's simple to do and VERY informative!

I have a design (694kb) downloaded from internet onto PC (memory stick and a folder on the PC). I can't get it to transfer from the PC to my machine. I plug my memory stick into my machine, but cannot get it to show up that way. It says "transmitting by USB" but nothing shows up. Can anyone help with this? I am fairly new to all this stuff, so all suggestions will be appreciated. Miss Barb

I suspect you have more than a design in there. Most designs are only about 10kb to 50kb in size. One that is 694kb would be HUGE! Does the file say .pes behind it? Or is it .zip? If it's still zipped up then your Innovis won't see the design. You need to unzip it first. Here's a couple videos on ATW showing how to unzip a design...

I have three surefire tricks for protecting yourself from serious computer problems...
1) When you get an email from someone you don't know, delete it.
2) When you get an email about "your winnings", delete it too.
3) When you get an email about "your account" delete that one too.
Congratulations! You've just avoided 80% of the problems you can get into on the web.
The curiosity factor may tempt you to open those emails but really consider the consequences first. It seems like the most popular place to scam peole today is in their email inbox. I wont repeat the stories because you can read all about them on this website...

What they are suggesting you do is print out a sheet of paper showing what the design looks like... Ie... A "template". Most editing programs will allow you to do this including Embird and Designers Gallery.
I don't have an embroidery program as such. I can manipulate designs within my machine such as combining designs, enlarging, density, etc. so have not purchased that kind of software. I do have photo editors. I can try to see if they will print them out but I really doubt that it is possible. As I see it, my template will be an actual stitch out on scrap, awkward but usable.
Thanks for this question. It's often confusing as a newbie to understand how viewing designs works. A photo editor won't be able to view the pattern.
The lowest cost way to VIEW files is with "SewIconz". It's available at the following website and a picture of what it does is at the bottom of this article. Website = http://sandscomputing.com/page5.html and the program is just $20.
The lowest cost program that will allow you to view, edit, convert, and print out design files is called "Sew What" and is $50. They have a 30-day free trial and you can learn more about the program at this webpage... http://sandscomputing.com/page2.html
The most popular program for editing is called "Embird". It's been around longer than "Sew What" and so many people use it that it's easy to find someone that can answer your questions about how to do something with the software. It's available at http://www.embird.com and costs about $99 for the basic program which is what you would need for viewing and printing out designs. It also has a 30-day free trial offer.
There are two programs available from http://www.BuzzTools.com as well. BuzzTools is $99 and BuzzXplore is $169. Both allow you to see the design but "Xplore" has better cataloging features than BuzzTools.
There are also programs from the various embroidery machine manufacturers. Their programs are available at your local dealer and typically are from $200 to $900. Most of them don't do much more than the $99 programs, but they do support your local dealer and machine manufacturer.
The $900 program I am referring to is for owners of Bernina Artista machines. Their format (ART) is proprietary, meaning the Bernina company won't allow other software makers to sell software that converts to the ART format. So if you have a Bernina Artista and want to convert designs from other formats to the ART format, your only choice is THEIR software.
I recommend that you download a free trial copy of SewWhat and use it a lot for 30 days to see if you like it. Then download a copy of Embird and use it a lot for 30 days. Then download a 21-day free trial of BuzzTools. Then a 21 day trial of BuzzXplore. After you've tried the programs out to see which one you like best, buy it. If you're going to be in the machine embroidery hobby then having good software is a necessity.

"Simple Sales" covers how to set up a simple website without a lot of fussing around with all the details most people find staggering at first. IE... what software to use, what hosting company, what about "graphics", etc.
Then it also shows how to make your site take orders for products. I specifically showed how to set it up to take orders for "digital products" like embroidery designs, but you could also use it to sell other e-products like music, e-books, video clips and similar items that are delivered AUTOMATICALLY to the customer a few seconds after they buy the product.
I showed how to sell digitial products in this video because it's one of the hardest things to figure out how to sell online. But it's not the ONLY thing people want to sell so I latger decided to also show how to sell PHYSICAL products online easily. Since the SIMPLE WEBSITE video had already been released, I added "How to set up a Paypal account and sell products with it" to the next video I released called "Computer Skills For Embroidery". That video is a mixture of all kinds of things people need help with on their computer.
Do you need both videos to build a website and sell physical products online? Probably not. The SIMPLE WEBSITE video will show how to do everything you need to know. You just have to skip the part about uploading your digital products and add BUY NOW buttons for physical products instead. I haven't been able to see any of the videos on this site, plus several others on the web. I hit the click for the video and up comes a little box with green on the bottom of it. From Camtasia Studio.
It says I have to have java script enabled and the latest version of the macromedio flash player.
I can't tell you how many times I've downloaded the flash player. I went into the browser internet options and made sure the java script enabled. there was another little box that mentioned java, so I enabled that one too.

We had this problem with Holly's computer. I finally found out that Adobe makes it nearly impossible to un-install Flash Player without using their Un-install tool located here...

Once you un-install the old version using this tool, you will be able to successfully install the newer version and then you can watch videos again.

On Saturday Nov 17th 2007 I will cover the following topics (or as many as possible until time runs out) IN OUR LIVE ONLINE CLASSROOM...
"When I tried to boot up my computer this morning, it froze at the "resuming windows" screen and wouldn't go any further (I'm using Windows XP). Is this something I can try to fix or is it a major problem that needs to go to the shop? I tried rebooting several times and it wouldn't advance past this screen."
It sounds like your hard drive hiccupped and lost some of the files needed to start Windows. If you CAN'T get into Windows then you'll have to choose steps 1-2-3 below. The first idea though is to boot while tapping on the F8 key to see if you can get into Windows "Safe" mode. If it lets you in, then go to the start menu, choose "Help & Support" and then "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore". Choose a date PRIOR to when Windows woudln't boot and let the computer roll-back the calendar for you. If that works, then the next thing you should do is MAKE A BACKUP.
If you still can't get into Windows then here are some more possible solutions...
1) Boot from a CD "boot disk" that you have created while the system was good. (Yeah. Right. Like you knew to do that!) And do a complete backup of your data files.
2) Re-install Windows-XP. When you get it going, do a complete backup of your files.
3) Take it to a repair shop where they will re-install Windows-XP for you and POSSIBLY replace your hard drive after they test it to see if it's gone bad. Have them set up your old hard drive as an external drive that you can access to make backups of your data files.

I had a few people tell me that they tried watching the video (see "Thanks For The Memories" below) but their computer kept telling them to upgrade to a newer version of Flash Player. They did and it still told them to upgrade to a newer version of Flash Player. They did and it still told them to upgrade to a newer version of Flash Player. They did and... you get the idea :-)
I wrote about this problem about a week ago. Here's the solution in the archives of The Bobbin Buzz "Computer Help" section!

A customer wrote this morning that she couldn't download designs suddenly. I asked her about her Anti-Virus and Firewall software and found out she was using the free programs provided by Comcast.
Here's the solution and it's FREE...
I used to have Comcast until a couple months ago. Here's what their home page says... "All new McAfee security suite is included." And therin lies most of your downloading problems. Interesting that when you do a search on Google for "comcast internet" one of the first pages you see says this...
"Comcast.net: If your Web browser is stuck on this page, Comcast.net may have a conflict with your Internet security software. Click here to chat live with a Comcast ..."
So they KNOW it causes problems but for some reason they persist in their deal with McAfee!
It's not their anti-virus software that causes the problems. It's their Firewall software. Most of the anti-virus software makers are now creating a "suite" of software instead of just anti-virus. Why? Because they can sell 3 pieces of software in a bundle for more money than they can sell one piece of software. Great - if it wasn't for the problems created by their firewall programs.
To put it simply, they set up their firewalls to grab control of your computer and not let you do things you still want to do, all in the name of "security". The simple solution is to turn off their firewall program and turn on the one that's included with Windows for free. It works fine and won't cause the download issues you're currently having.
Go into your McAfee Contol Center and select "Firewall". Set it to "OFF". Then go into your Windows START menu and choose ALL PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / SYSTEM TOOLS / SECURITY CENTER. Choose "Windows Firewall". Set it to "ON". Then click "OKAY". That's it.
Reboot your computer and try downloading again.

"The other day I went to back up my external hard drive onto a dvd and when I turned it on, the computer only read L:Local Drive, instead of L:Seagate. Ok, so I clicked on it and a small window came up and stated hard drive not formatted, do you want to format it now? I clicked no. Is it dead? It turns on and makes a sound like it is trying to work, however, I can't get it to give any info. When I click into properties, all I get is a solid blue pie chart. I went to Seagate.com and they have a program called seatools. do you think I should try this? or what can anyone suggest. I really don't want to lose my most recent designs. DRAT!!!"

"I went to seagate online and found a data recovery software demo. It is finding a lot of the files and it will be worth the 129.00 or so to get them back. I spoke in an online chat with Seagate and they told me it could cost anywhere from $799-2400 to recover the files. Whoa. I think I'll stick with my bright ideas of just searching the web and do it myself. Thanks for your help, Larry and I hope this works and I can get the files put on a dvd QUICKLY!!!"
I don't mean to NAG but this brings up a really important point... if you don't backup your embroidery files, it can cost you a LOT of money to replace them. You may be able to have a service recover those files for you at anywhere from $800 to $2,400 cost, or you may have to re-download those files, costing you hundreds of hours of your time. And in many cases, the places you bought the designs from will not let you re-download them for free. We DO allow you to do that, but some places don't. If you lose the design, you have to re-buy them, adding even more expense to the process.
"I have been downloading some wonderful designs but somehow they are now all going automatically to the temporary folder instead of where I normally put them in My Documents / Embroidery Files. I am not sure how the routing got changed, but I can not seem to figure out how to fix it. I use Windows XP and my email is through yahoo if you think that makes any difference. The Help files were NOT Helpful at all. Any help is appreciated."

I would download the files, but all I got were the text files... I don't know WHAT happened, but I found them, the designs were there, probaly the whole time!!! I have this thing called CFA... known as CAN'T FIND ANYTHING!!!! -- Mair

CFA is pretty common and it seems to be spreading! I think that MOST of the time what happens is we install a new program and it changes your system to work with files that way it want to work with them. The problem is that probably isn't the way you're used to working with files and suddenly things work differently and you can't find anything or... CFA!
The only real solution is to learn how to use the "SEARCH" feature built into Windows to look through your hard drive and find out where the heck that thing went to! I have to do this all the time too so you're not alone. -- Larry

I'd suggest Embird Basic. It's a very powerful and versatile program.
RE: Would you suggest Catalog Xpress by Ann the Gran or SewCat?
I can't recommend either one. Both are cataloging programs and I'm at a loss as to why a person wouldn't just use SewIconz or Iconizer to view your designs using MyComputer and sort them that way instead of using a cataloging program.

I installed a new piece of software a couple days ago. Everything seemed right with the world at first, then I started noticing little things going very wrong...
When I tried to shutdown my computer, it hung up and wouldn't shut down. I resorted to killing it with the power button. Then I'd get a popup notice about my spysweeper program not running and I couldn't close that popup. Then some of the tools in my drawing program stopped working. It was definitely getting worse by the hour. Time for drastic measures!
The first step was to remove the new program. Then I rolled back my computer to an earliers time using "System Restore". It took half a day to get everything working right again but all is good now.
So what did I do next? I created another "System Restore" point on my computer! If your computer is running well today then TODAY is the right time to make a restore point.
Go to START / HELP & SUPPORT / "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore"
Then click where it says "Create A Restore Point" then "Next". Then give your restore point a name like "SETTINGS GOOD" and save it. That's it! You've got a good place to go back to now if you run into problems down the road.
Make one about once a week and you'll be way ahead when the need comes up.

It's been a while since I backed up my designs so I tried to do that today. I downloaded the designs to a CD-R like I have done in the past and when I went to see if the designs were actually on the CD, the tower wound up as if to read the CD but nothing happened. I made a new CD thinking the first CD had a problem. Same thing happened. My question is... were there too many designs on the CD? How long would it take for the computer to read the CD if there were about 500 designs on it? Thanks for any help.

When you burn to a CD it's a two-step process if you're using Windows to make it. Step-1 puts the files into a holding area and step-2 actually burns them onto the disk. Many people don't know that they have to complete the process by initiating step-2.
There's a couple ways to deal with this. One is to use software for burning CD's that isn't just the Windows built-in system. Many of the other software programs do a much better job of handling this issue. A couple of my programs have an area where you put the stuff you want to add to the CD and then a big red button that says "BURN" for when you're ready to actuall burn the CD.
If you're using Windows then after you add the files to the disk holding area, you want to click to initiate the burn.
And to answer the other question -- it would take about 10 seconds to read the CD with 500 designs on it.

I thought you had written an article about Tablet PCs, i.e., kind you use, any recommendations, etc., but I have searched two or three times and cannot locate it. Is my memory faulty or am I just bad at searching? Do you have a preference as to type of Tablet, features you recommend, etc.? I am contemplating purchasing one and knew you had experience with them. -- Bev

There are two ways to do this. One is to buy a "tablet pc" -- it's a notebook/laptop pc with a screen you can write on with the special pen. The other way is to buy a special graphics tablet that plugs into your existing computer.
The brand and model you want to get is called a Wacom "DTF" or a "Cintiq". If you buy a tablet-pc then you'll be buying a Wacom tablet built into a laptop. Here's the one made by Toshiba that Holly uses for digitizing...

I am a novice at digitizing, but I wish I had better control of moving lines, etc. I have a cheaper mouse and wondered if there is a good mouse for digitizers?

There are several ways to go. If you're using a mouse with a ball on the bottom then you can move up to an "optical" mouse. It's not as "jerky" as the old ball-style mosuse. Prices for good brand names are around $20 - $29 for an optical mouse.
The next step up is a "laser" mouse. The laser works a little better than the "optical" mouse. It has a slightly noticable improvement in accuracy.
Many people like using a pen & tablet instead of a mouse. Wacom makes a line called the "graphire" and another one called the "Intuos" which is a step up from the graphire. They come in various sizes and start under $100 for the "graphire" and go up to over $500 for the larges "Intuos". Some people swear by them. Others find they don't improve anything.
The last step on the ladder is the Wacom "Cintique" or "DTF" tablets. They are computer monitors with touch sensitive screens. Prices start around $1,000 for these. I've already written an article about them and members of ATW can read it here...

In fact - it's for the digitiizers that already know how to digitize and are now trying to improve their accuracy and speed.
We get emails every week from people who own a digitizing program and want to know if "XYZ Digitizing Software" is better than the one they already own. One email will say "I own PE-Design and I'm thinking about buying Generations - whaddyathink?" Then the next email will say "I own Generations and I'm thinking about buying PE-Design - whaddyathink?" If you already own a "mainstream" digitizing program you should stick with that program and put your money into lessons on how to use it. Lessons are available on CD or in workbooks form or in live group classes or even one-on-one classes on every major digitizing program. And enough lessons to make you a competent digiitizer will normally cost less than half the price of that other program you're looking at - which by the way will ALSO require lessons if you don't already know how to digitize. :-)
So as I said -- this one is for people who already know how to use their software and want to improve their accuracy and speed.
Toshiba has made laptops for decades now. They came out with "table pc's" a few years ago and a tablet is a great digitizing tool. Their newest tablets have dropped in price and you can now buy a new tablet laptop starting at $1449. And a if you want to stuff it full of RAM (4 gb) and the biggest hard drive available (160gb) it's still less than $2200.
That's a nice piece of equipment for the digitizer. Take a look...

Answer...
New camera with more megapixels? Your new camera's photos are probably much bigger files now. If you make the photos smaller they will upload faster. Open them in photo sofware and resize to a smaller size for uploads. Best size to make is about 500 pixels wide or choose 640x480 if that is an option. :-)
